Launched in 1999 at London Men’s Fashion Week I wanted the kilt to be more accessible to people without a Clan/Tartan connection, like myself, I have no family Tartan.

The brand and I was intertwined in Geoffrey (Tailor), this caused an infusion of modern and traditional I did not expect or want. Between the age of 20 & 30 I travelled promoting both modern & Traditional.
Sometimes away 27 weekends of the year; Scottish Highland Festivals in the USA & Canada, The NYC Tartan Day celebrations, a Monthly London fitting and other exhibitions such as the Clothes Show Live NEC Birmingham (where I met my amazing wife).

TFCK should not be worn with the usual cream socks and Jacobite shirts - the mix at Geoffrey (Tailor) did not work for me. In 2009, I was able to go independent to my own store on Thistle Street.

This decade allowed me to build and develop the brand. Now uniquely positioned in the options available for men wanting an un-bifurcated option in their wardrobe.

5000 days later… on the 18th of September 2022 I have moved back to the Royal Mile and re-unified with Geoffrey Tailor & Kiltmaker. My father Geoffrey has retired and I am working with an old colleague and friend, John Webster; foremost expert in Traditional Highland Dress.

Appointments are recommended but we are open 6 days 10am – 5pm (Closed Sundays).

We look forward to welcoming you back to the ‘New’ Store: 59 High Street, Royal Mile.

THE MOVEMENT
SO FAR...

I created 21st Century Kilts (TFCK) aged 18 in 1996. Being the 4th generation in the kilt industry, I needed to make my own mark within my parent’s business, Geoffrey (Tailor) Kiltmakers.

Awesome Denim Kilt
I just received a Denim Kilt, and It is really beautiful and extremely comfortable. The fit is perfect, and the denim quality is outstanding. I now always reach for it on informal situations. This is a great option if you like kilts and want a stylish denim touch!

experience from start to finish was a joy
My husband Alan has had his eye on an outfit from 21st Century kilts for a couple of years now. Having passed the stylish wee shop on Thistle Street many times, he would play picks with what he liked from their window displays. He finally took the plunge and booked an appointment with Howie last Saturday. Now being a little on the shy side, Alan was a touch nervous about how it would be, but Howie and Fraser were total gents and put him right at ease with offering him a bottle of beer whilst he was looking through the fabric books. The whole experience from start to finish was a joy. Howie knows his craft inside out, having been born into the business with his parents running Geoffrey Tailor kilt shop on the Royal Mile. Howie has his own distinctive style and flare and does it well. He walked us through all the decision making like linings, button thread colour, style, pockets, edgings, cuts with total ease and recommendations where we needed guidance. During our appointment we had the place to ourselves and there were two visitors who popped into the shop, one previous customer who had his 21st Century kilt on and was passing enroute to the Scotland rugby match and wanted to say hello, and a groom to be collecting his outfit for the big day. On both occasions there was such good will and a warm friendly feeling with all parties, this place makes you smile. Our appointment was 90 minutes in total and flew past and we left with immense excitement about getting the bespoke kilt outfit (kilt, ghuillie pockets, socks, waist coat & jacket) and what the 1st event will be that it will be worn to. If you are looking for something with a bit of character and a change from the normal Prince Charlie jackets and traditional tartans then this place is for you.

Positive
When some music awards came to Edinburgh a couple of years back (sorry about being vague, I think it was MTV) obviously Vin Diesel and the likes had to show their appreciation of being in our wonderful country by wearing kilts. I'm using Vin as the example here as I remember him having an iconic leather one. All of the Kilts in question were made by Howie of 21st Century Kilts who strongly believes that they shouldn't just be a formal item and every Scot should have one as part of a versatile wardrobe. Enough novelty and let's make men 100 times more attractive.

Updated review.
Updated review. Well their website estimate of 6-8 weeks for a bespoke outfit is proving to be a little tardy. 14 weeks and counting and still eagerly awaiting the finished product. (Granted this included over the Christmas period) The initial perfect service has waned a little. I'm sure it will be fantastic once it is here........getting a little eager to see the finished product.

Ooooh La La!
21st Century Kilts is a wonderful boutique that's furnished with lovely wooden cabinets, old photos and retro furniture. As the name implies however, the clothes are very 21st century with lead designer Howie creating gorgeous men and womens kilts. There's traditional kilts in wool, tweed and tartan but the thing that customers can't get enough of is their more playful denim, pinstripe, linen, pvc and leather kilts. To add icing on the cake, 21st Century Kilts stock and sew kilts in a variety of styles and lengths from traditional and hipster to full length kilts that go from the hip to the ankle. They also offer a variety of different buttons, horns, buckles and finishes - making it a rather unique and fun boutique.

21st Century Kilts was excellent
We went to a few stores in Edinburgh but were disappointed by their lack of brown jackets and outfits that were 'a little different'. Howie from 21st Century Kilts was excellent and helped Kris put together the perfect kilt outfit even down to the lining inside. He makes the kilts in the shop in Thistle Street, Edinburgh and although we had left the kilt ordering a little late it was made in enough time and was perfect. The tartan Kris chose had stopped being made by the manufacturer but Howie managed to source the very last length of it to make Kris's kilt.
