There is no better way to celebrate your Scottish wedding than by having a Scottish Highland Piper play at your wedding. A good Scottish Piper symbolises the very essence of being Scottish and to see one in full Highland dress is a very stirring sight to most Scots.
However, before you book a piper for your wedding you should always confirm how he will dress. Currently there are three different types of dress worn by pipers at Scottish weddings. The Number One Uniform, the Number Two Uniform, and Casual.
Number One Uniform
The number one uniform is the full ceremonial uniform with its roots in the Scottish Regiments. It consists of kilt, piper's tunic, horsehair sporran, spats, diced tartan hose, plaid (tartan across the shoulder), brogues, and a feather bonnet or busby.
This is common image most people have of a Highland Piper and it is very impressive. Even if other guests are wearing kilts, the piper will still look different and stand out from the crowd.
Number Two Uniform
The number two uniform is more modern and consists of a glengarry cap, kilt, horse-hair sporran, Argyll jacket (Prince Charlie), shirt, tie, and brogues. It is a less formal look and the piper will be similar to the guests who are wearing kilts.
Casual or Romantic
This is a different approach and modern interpretation of the piper. He wears a romantic-style white shirt, kilt, sporran, and brogues. This is smart but quite informal.
Obviously most people's image of a Piper will be based on the Number One Uniform with the tall feather bonnet. So, if this is the way you want your piper to look, then you should make sure he has a number one uniform and will wear it.
Services Offered By The Piper
Most good wedding pipers will offer to play before and after your ceremony, when the photographs are being taken, and then pipe in the top table. You may also ask the piper to pipe you up and down the aisle. The choice is yours and you can have him play as little or as much as you want.
How To Choose The Best Piper
In Scotland there are literally hundreds of pipers and the quality can vary quite widely. However, one there is one fact that can help you choose a piper. A Pipe Major of any band is considered to be one of the best and most knowledgeable pipers in the band. So, instead of just booking a piper, you should book a Pipe Major.
Seek Professional Advice
If you are unsure about which piper to book, then you can ask a professional Agent to give you some advice. If the agent is good, then it will not cost you anything and he will be able to advise you on which pipers have a good track record.
The other great advantage of using a good Agent is that if the piper you have booked becomes ill or has an accident, then the agent will make every effort to find you a replacement piper at short notice. The service alone is worth its weight in gold to any bride.
